What perfect timing for your post. My 2003 is in the carport now with exactly 100 miles on it. A Supertrapp is waiting at Cycle Gear and the carb kit should be there by next week. I ordered the Clymer manual from Barnes & Noble a few days ago for only 21.95...it should be here next week also. I don't think the shop where I bought the bike would let me watch them do the 600 mile service and I have doubts about what will be done...I think it costs around $200.00. One of the most important factors in choosing the Savage was its simplicity and the prospect of doing all the servicing myself. Until now, with this discussion, I had planned to have the dealer do the 600 mile service. Now I am convinced to do it myself. I even bought a Craftsman torque wrench last weekend. I will wait until after I do the 600 mile valve adjust to put on the Supertrapp and re-jet the carb. I am hearing what sounds like an awful lot of valve chatter right now and want to be able to hear if there is a difference after the adjustment. I am also hearing an intermittent squealing from the speedometer. I don't think it's just the rattle that someone posted a fix for, but I'll do the spring shim when the gas tank comes off. The seat mod went well..looks good with the electrical tape covering the plastic washers and cost me about $3.00. It's is ever so comforting to know I can move into these new areas of tuning with this great site and the wealth of knowledge that so many new friends make available to support me. Thanks to all for what I've learned so far...I'll post my progress and I'm sure I' be hollering for help.
